Montréal is one of North America’s most distinctive and vibrant cities, where European charm and North American dynamism come together in a uniquely cosmopolitan setting. Situated on an island in the St. Lawrence River and long a meeting and trading place for Indigenous peoples, Montréal has grown into a global metropolis of more than 3.6 million residents. As the world’s second-largest francophone city after Paris, it offers visitors a rich cultural experience shaped by both French and English traditions, while remaining welcoming, diverse, and internationally connected.
At the heart of the city lies McGill University, one of Canada’s leading research institutions and among the world’s top universities. Its downtown campus sits just south of Mount Royal, the picturesque landmark designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, whose celebrated park recently marked its 150th anniversary. Recognized by UNESCO as a City of Design, Montréal is renowned for its creativity, innovation, and quality of life. A global leader in fields such as artificial intelligence, aerospace, life sciences, and digital technologies, the city is equally famous for its festivals, culinary scene, nightlife, and cultural attractions.
Getting here
The city is served by Montréal–Trudeau International Airport, which offers extensive connections across Canada, the United States, and beyond. Travelers can reach downtown easily from the airport via public transit, taxi, or rideshare services. Montréal Metropolitan Airport in nearby Saint-Hubert also serves a growing number of domestic routes. Rail travelers can take advantage of frequent service from major Canadian cities through VIA Rail, as well as direct Amtrak service from New York City. Intercity bus services connect Montréal to destinations throughout Canada and the United States, arriving at the centrally located Gare d’autocars de Montréal, which is directly linked to the city’s metro network. For those traveling by car, Montréal is less than 50 miles from the U.S.–Canada border and is connected to a major network of highways.
